Preliminary step: Check device and OS compatibility
Before moving on to the troubleshooting steps, make sure that your device and operating system are compatible with the latest ExpressVPN version.
- Windows: Requires Windows 10 and above. Find out which Windows version you are using.
- If you are using Windows 7, 8, or 8.1: You can still use ExpressVPN, but a specific version of the app. Follow the instructions here to get the right version of ExpressVPN.
- Mac: Requires macOS Big Sur (11) and above. Find out which macOS version you are using.
- Linux: Supported distributions:
- Ubuntu: 24.04 LTS and above
- Debian: 12 and above
- Fedora: 39 and above
- Arch Linux: Latest rolling release
- Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit: Bookworm and above
- Linux Mint 22 and above
- Android: Requires Android 7.0 and above.
- iOS: Requires iOS 15 and above.
If your device is not running a compatible version, update your operating system and install the app again.
Step 1: Disable security software
Security software such as antivirus or firewall applications can sometimes interfere with the ExpressVPN app and prevent it from launching correctly. If you have any security software installed, temporarily disable it before proceeding.
Step 2: Perform a clean installation
A clean installation removes any corrupted files from a previous installation and replaces them with a fresh copy of the app. To do this:
- Uninstall the ExpressVPN app from your device. Follow these steps to properly uninstall and remove the ExpressVPN app.
- Restart your device.
- Download the latest version of the ExpressVPN app. To find instructions for your device, visit the download and install the ExpressVPN app guide.
- Once installed, try launching it again.

Follow the further troubleshooting steps below for Windows, Android, or iOS. If you are using the ExpressVPN app on macOS or Linux, please contact customer support for assistance.
Windows only: Restart Windows Services
If a clean installation did not resolve the issue, the problem may be related to a Windows service not running correctly. To restart the required services:
- Click the Start button and open Settings (gear icon).
- Select Update & Security.
- Open the search bar and type “services.msc,” then press Enter.
- Locate the ExpressVPN service in the list.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try launching the ExpressVPN app again.
Seeing Windows error messages?
If the issue is still not fixed and you are seeing one of these error messages:
- “Engine Unavailable”
- “Service Unreachable”
- “Unable to Start Service”

Android and iOS: Try the beta version
Try installing the beta version of the ExpressVPN app, which may contain fixes not yet available in the current release. Learn how to become an ExpressVPN beta user.
Android only: Downgrade the app
If the issue started after a recent update, the latest version of the app may have a bug affecting your device. Try downgrading to an older version to confirm. To do so, contact the ExpressVPN Support Team and ask for a link to a previous version of the app.
